Product Description

Allopurinol is a medication used primarily in the treatment of gout and certain types of kidney stones. It is classified as a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, which means it reduces the production of uric acid in the body.  

 

Description:

Allopurinol is a white crystalline powder that is odorless and practically insoluble in water. It belongs to the class of medications known as hypouricemic agents.

• Solubility: Insoluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol and dilute sodium hydroxide solutions

Features:

• Xanthine Oxidase Inhibition: Allopurinol works by inhibiting the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which is responsible for the conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine and then to uric acid. By reducing the activity of xanthine oxidase, allopurinol lowers the levels of uric acid in the blood, preventing the formation of urate crystals.
• Uric Acid Reduction: By decreasing uric acid levels, allopurinol helps prevent the formation of urate crystals in the joints, thereby relieving symptoms of gout, such as joint pain, swelling, and inflammation. It also aids in the prevention of uric acid kidney stones.
• Prophylactic Use: Allopurinol is often prescribed as a long-term therapy to prevent recurrent episodes of gout and to manage conditions associated with excessive uric acid production, such as certain types of kidney stones and hyperuricemia.
• Metabolism: Allopurinol is metabolized in the liver to its active form, oxypurinol. The elimination half-life of allopurinol is approximately 1-2 hours, while oxypurinol has a longer half-life of around 13-30 hours.

• Gout: Allopurinol is commonly used for the treatment and prevention of gout. It helps reduce the frequency and severity of gout attacks by lowering uric acid levels in the body.
• Kidney Stones: Allopurinol can be employed to manage certain types of kidney stones caused by high uric acid levels. By reducing uric acid production, it minimizes the formation of urate crystals in the urinary tract, thereby preventing stone formation.
• Tumor Lysis Syndrome: Allopurinol is also used in the management of tumor lysis syndrome, a condition that occurs as a result of rapid cancer cell breakdown, leading to increased uric acid levels. By inhibiting xanthine oxidase, allopurinol helps prevent uric acid accumulation and associated complications.
